Sarah Willie-LeBreton
Sarah Willie-LeBreton is the 12th president of Smith College. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from Haverford College, on whose board she has also served, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Northwestern University, all in sociology. After having taught at Colby and Bard Colleges, she was tenured at Swarthmore, where she chaired the Black Studies Program, the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and was eventually appointed as provost and dean of the faculty until 2023.
Willie-LeBreton, an applied sociologist, is a scholar of higher education, social inequality, and African American culture. She has worked with a broad range of organizations to understand social dynamics and develop strategies to move toward organizational self-awareness, transformation, compassion, and inclusivity. She is a member of Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey’s DRIVE Initiative. She is also a board member of the Women’s College Coalition, the Five College Consortium of Western Massachusetts, and the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Massachusetts.
